Rivers breaking their banks as a result of heavy monsoon rains in northeast Bangladesh have cut off roughly 2 million people. Many families have been left trapped, and they may run out of food in the coming days.
Flooding has devastated communities in low-lying parts of Sylhet and Sunamganj. Homes and schools, as well as critical infrastructure like electricity lines, water supplies, and roadways, have all been destroyed or submerged. Floods have impacted many residents for the second time in a month, following catastrophic flooding in the region in mid-May.
Infrastructure that is critical to the country's survival has been destroyed. Victimized children, women, men, and the elderly are cut off from life-saving medicine, crucial communication, and transportation when floods strike. Thousands of toilets and tube wells have already been damaged, and many people are much more exposed to disease transmission due to a lack of sanitation and shelter.
So many people will continue to suffer long after the crisis is over if needed help and intervention are not provided. Hundreds of educational facilities have been closed or inundated as a result of the terrible floods, putting the future of education for many people in jeopardy.
