The monsoon season causes floods in Malaysia's eastern regions on a regular basis, but torrential rains have exacerbated the problem this year. By the weekend, the number of individuals who had been evacuated had surpassed 160,000 as floodwaters surged through coastal settlements.

The flooding is the worst Malaysia has seen in 30 years, affecting residents in eight states. Peninsular Malaysia's North-eastern belt states have taken the brunt of the damage. The belts in the north and south have also been damaged.

Roads have been blocked by landslides and flooding, making rescue and relief activities difficult. Floodwater has totally blocked off several settlements, severing power and communication cables.
