Zakat al-Fitr is one of the types of zakat obligatory on Muslims, which is paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, or before the end of the fast of Ramadan, and it is obligatory for every Muslim who is able to pay it, regardless of age or gender. It is given to the poor and needy and the rest of the eight categories mentioned by God Almighty. In the verse of zakat spending

{إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَٰتُ لِلۡفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلۡمَسَٰاكِينِ وَٱلۡعَٰامِلِينَ عَلَيۡهَا وَٱلۡمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَفِي ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلۡغَٰارِمِينَ وَفِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِۖ فَرِيضَةٗ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٞ}

Alms-tax is only for the poor and the needy, for those employed to administer it, for those whose hearts are attracted ˹to the faith˺, for ˹freeing˺ slaves, for those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and for ˹needy˺ travellers. ˹This is˺ an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Ibn ’Abbas (RAA) narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) enjoined Zakat-al-Fitr on the one who fasts (i.e. fasted during the month of Ramadan) to purify him from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakah for the person who pays it before the Eid prayer and it is Sadaqah (i.e. voluntary charity) for the person who pays it after the Eid prayer.’ Related by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah and Al-Hakim graded it as Sahih.

Zakat al-Fitr is estimated at one saa’ of the food of the country that its people eat. It may be a sa’ of dates, or barley, or something else. Evidence for the saying of the companion Ibn Omar - may God be pleased with them -: (The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, enjoined zakat al-Fitr a saa’ of dates, or a saa of barley) "A saa" weighs three kilograms.
